Profile

My name is Colleen Yeany. I live in an outpost town in a beautiful, rugged place. I have a long-time interest in making my life and work reflect a passion to do right by the earth and all its creatures. Right now, my husband and I are just starting out in our careers, with no permanent roots and an unlimited horizon. I don’t pretend that making environmentally and socially responsible choices is easy, but I hope to share what I learn along the way.

I work as Park Naturalist, where I teach children and adults about the astonishing things all around them. This is very similar to the job I had longest, which was as a tour guide and assistant to the Director of a natural history museum in the college I attended.
I never thought I would be a teacher; in fact, I thought I would never be a teacher. I didn’t think I could stand to teach the same things year after year, but what I’ve found is that teaching is never the same–especially outdoors. I hope to share the lessons I’m learning about nature conservation as part of my green and simple living theme, because everything is connected and we can’t ignore the world that supports and sustains us.

A few other things about me: I have a B.S. in Environmental Science; I lived and studied in England for six months; I am a member of the National Association for Interpretation, which is the fancy word for teaching about nature and history in a more animated way than usual. I like to read, write, hike, cook (when it works) and do yoga. I especially like poetry and chocolate. And right now, in addition to writing this blog, I’m trying to learn basic Spanish so that some day we can go to Costa Rica and walk the canopy among the birds.

Hi Colleen!

We see that you added Ecollo to your blogroll. Thanks, we do appreciate it!

We’re just wondering if you’d like us to add a text link to your blog to our Ecollo Friends section on the site.

Thanks again!

Didn’t know if you’ve seen this yet, but a new report has come out saying millions of birds, particularly migratory birds, will be killed by tar sands development in Canada. It’s already in close to 50 papers and is becoming quite a big deal. Here’s an article from CBC:

Report page with link to report:

There’s also a video on YouTube talking about the huge impact the tar sands has on birds, mostly from an interview with Dr. Jeff Wells:

If your blog is in HTML you can embed the video into your blog by copying/pasting the code where it says “embed” to the right of the video.
