Save Sabal Palm Sanctuary from a Proposed Border Wall
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is planning to construct a concrete border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, breaking numerous environmental laws in the process. Several critical wildlife habitats will be affected, including the Sabal Palm Audubon Center & Sanctuary, whose website says,
“The Center and Sanctuary sit on a 557-acre tract of land along the Rio Grande, affording visitors a unique opportunity to experience the rich biodiversity found in the Valley, and exposing them to one of the rarest and most endangered ecosystems in America. Here visitors will find the last vestiges of palm forest that once dominated much of the lower Rio Grande Delta.”
The Audubon Society is sponsoring a petition to rethink the border strategy in a way that protects the Sanctuary and similar habitats in the region. You can sign the petition here.
Protect Critical Boreal Forest Songbird Habitat
The Boreal Songbird Initiative is calling for signatures, Canadian and otherwise, to encourage Canada’s protection of it’s crucial yet shrinking boreal forests. Only 8% of the boreal forest in Canada is protected, while 30% has already been put to industrial use. Boreal forests serve as breeding grounds for approximately 300 bird species, many of which we enjoy in our own backyards. Learn more at http://www.borealbirds.org/, where you can even test you knowledge of the birds you’ll help save if you sign the petition here.
Above: Common Redpoll. 47% of this species’ North American population breeds in the boreal forest.

What a great way to help support conservation of one of the most important biomes on the planet, not to mention an area which is often only considered as an afterthought regarding significance to the western hemisphere’s breeding birds. I agree, support the Boreal Songbird Initiative today!
